Growth to Spiritual Maturity


Every Christians must grow towards spiritual maturity, into the image and likeness of Christ in order to truly live and walk in the Spirit.  To attain this, our body which is the temple of God must be filled with the fullness of God, as God gives the Spirit without limits.

As humans, we all have a physical body, a soul and a spirit. I quote Stephen Covey who says, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience.”

God creates us first in the spirit and put us in our earthly mother’s womb to be birthed with a physical earthly body. Our human spirit is entrapped in our sinful human body weighed down by the earth’s gravity. We need to grow towards spiritual maturity in order to free our human’s spirit from the force of gravity. This force bursting through the gravity of the flesh is like a rocket being launched into space. As a spacecraft in orbit can see earth very clearly, so will a human’s spirit in such position can see things that other cannot see.

Body - 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

“Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly–mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?”

Soul - 1 Corinthians 2:14

“The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

Spirit - 1 Corinthians 2:11

“For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

Spiritual Maturity

On the scale of maturity, God's measurement on the growth of spiritual maturity is how one lives with abundant blessing with the fullness of God in us to love others as "God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who FEAR Him and DO WHAT IS RIGHT" (Acts 10:34-35).

Without our spirit-being continually strengthened with power, many Christians will be led by their soul and sinful flesh instead of being led by the Spirit (Romans 8:14). Those led by their soul and sinful flesh will never walk and experience the abundant blessing and fullness of God because pride, deception, fear and unwillingness to be taught the truth by God or the people of God come from our carnal sinful nature.

All the works of the Holy Spirit are done through man's spirit while the works of the enemy are all done  through man's soul and sinful flesh. Ephesians 3:16-19 taught us to seek the Lord on strengthening our spirit with power  through His Spirit in order to grow to spiritual maturity, to the image and likeness of Christ.

Prayers of Ephesians 3:16-19

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
